Learn About Ultimate Frisbee

New to Ultimate Frisbee? Don't worry, it's an easy sport to pick up and is fun for all ages. Below you can find plenty of resources to get you started before hitting the field.

How to Play

Here is a short video explaining the basic rules of Ultimate Frisbee that we use when we play.

Quick Terms We Use

On this website, there may be terms you are unfamiliar with, get to know the lingo below.

Pickup

Pickup is a term commonly used in sports to mean an informal gathering of people to play a sport/game. Players do not require an invite, and do not need to rsvp. Players arrive, teams are made, and play begins. A great way to be introduced to a sport or game.

League or League Play

League events typically are a step-up in the level of competition from pickup. League typically features higher skill level players, and more strategy in the way the game is played. We always encourage people to try out our leagues, however newer players should be open to coaching to help increase their skill level and understanding of the game.

Discraft Ultrastar

The Discraft Ultrastar 175G disc is the official disc of USA Ultimate, and is what we use to play. While it may seem silly, we do not typically play with a Wham-O Frisbee. Ultrastars are sometimes less expensive, and are better suited for Ultimate.

Spirit of the Game

The Spirit of the Game is a component of Ultimate that is unique to this sport. During play,  players are trusted to call their own fouls, picks, etc. with honesty and fairness and with no assistance from an official. This reinforces the underlying principles of mutual respect and trust between players, and aids in conflict resolution. It also serves as a reminder that no matter the level of competition, Ultimate is designed to be a fun sport and that we focus on the joy of playing, rather than winning or losing. For more on the Spirit of the Game, see usaultimate.org/spirit-of-the-game.

What Can I Do to Practice or Improve Before I Come Play?

BRU wants to provide a comfortable environment for players of all skill levels. If you are new to the sport, please come join us at pickup. We are always willing to work with folks to introduce them to the sport and help them improve at those events. If you are looking for more though, see some tips below.

Play Catch

Its just that simple! Get out there and just toss a disc around with a friend. It will help you improve two of the most important parts of the game, throwing and catching.

Jog or Run

Feeling like you need to improve your cardio? Jogging or running will help get your legs and heart up to the task of playing Ultimate. It is a very cardio-intensive sport.

Practice throwing

The hardest part for most is learning how to effectively throw a disc. YouTube is a great resource to help improve. Easy throwing drills can be practiced in a backyard or field.
